Are you putting your trust in human leaders?

“For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written; ‘He catches the wise in their craftiness’, and again, ‘The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.’ So then, no more boasting about human leaders!” 1 Corinthians 3:19-21.

Verses chosen from today’s Bible reading: Joshua 1-2, Psalm 37, and 1 Corinthians 3.

There were folks in Paul’s day who were attaching their loyalties to those who were bringing the Good News. Some wanted to follow Paul. Others wanted to follow Apollos or Peter.

Paul tells these folks that humans are not worthy of being followed.

Why is that? Humans are sinners. Humans get things wrong. The “wisdom” of humans is faulty because it is not always coming from the Ultimate Source of wisdom.

Does this teaching apply to 2016? You bet it does!

In our day we have four national politicians touting their wisdom. “I have the answers for this problem or that problem.” And when they offer solutions that are consistent with the Bible, they sure do have the right answers.

The issue is that when any/all of them tell us that THEY will be carrying out the solutions, you know that they have gone godless. As a result, they can’t be trusted.

Sadly, the godless in our midst are eager to flock to any human that says what they want to hear. These folks do not examine the foundations of these godless talkers. They cling to sinking sand as if it can somehow be supportive of the life they long for.

God is the Ultimate Foundation. Humans will never be able to provide what God can provide.

Our “boasting” must be in God. He is the One we must follow. Let us pray that we may be able to discern which of these election-seeking politicians will best be an instrument of God.

“Lord, open my eyes/ears to see/hear as You do. Enable me to discern Your Will. Grant me Your Wisdom in this election year. Intervene as You can, to elevate to power the best instrument to carry out what You want done. Wreck the plans of the godless. You are the Almighty One.”

Your ultimate trust must be in the Ultimate One.
