“And with that he breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” John 20:22-23.
Verses chosen from today’s Bible reading: Jeremiah 26 & 35-36, and John 20.
I am not a Bible scholar and these verses are a plunge into “deep” water. Forgive me if I miss the point.
Jesus has not yet ascended to His Father.
He appears to His disciples and empowers them to carry the message to people that their sins are forgiven.
And, yes, our sins are forgiven!
When Jesus died He took our sins (past/present/future) with Him. The power of sin over any and all of us ended when Jesus carried it to death.
BUT God raised Jesus from death and into a new life. A life free from the burden of sin. It is a life where the physical is transformed as indicated by Mary not recognizing Jesus.
That transformed life, freed of the power of sin, is the Gospel, the Good News. The event has happened for all of us.
To indicate that we believe the Good News we have to live accordingly. We have a new life unburdened by sin’s power. We have the promise of the Messiah’s return. Our task is to make this earth into the place God wants it to be. The Messiah will finish transforming the earth when He returns.
Many are unaware of what the Good News is. Many are aware of the Good News and yet refuse to believe it is true. We have the Holy Spirit to help us reach both groups.
“Lord, thank You for removing the burden of sin and giving new life. Open hearts to the Good News so that they may live the new life You have set up for each of us. You are a gracious God. We are undeserving of that grace. Thank You for loving us anyway. Hallelujah!”
Stop acting as if the Good News didn’t happen. It did!
