Heard the news?

“Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.   Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.”  Acts 13:38-39.

Verses chosen from today’s Bible reading: Job 9-10, and Acts 13-14.

This is the absolute core of the Gospel.

The Ten Commandments did not free us from sin.  They pointed out what our sins were.

In the death of Jesus, He took everyone’s sins with Him.  This was once and forever.  No repetition needed.  It’s a done deal!

The beauty of being “set free” is awesome.  Think of someone who has been told that they are now cancer free.  There is a delight there for sure.  Our situation is even better; we are free from the burden of sin!  It no longer is something we have to lug around.

It is so simple, yet so many miss it.  Like Japanese soldier Hiroo Onoka, who chose to ignore the news that World War 2 was over, they choose to disregard the Good News.  Hiroo continued fighting in Lubang (Philippines) for twenty-nine years AFTER the war was over.  Numerous times the news reached him to quit fighting but he distrusted the news.  Tragic waste of time and not unlike those who refuse to believe the Good News.

“Lord, open hearts to Your news.  Sins are taken care of.  New life is available to be lived.  Thank You for what You have done.  I love You for it.  Help me to rightly represent You this day.  Thank You, Lord.”

Are you approaching the Good News as Hiroo Onoka approached the word that WW2 was over?
