How do you handle criticism?

“Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you.”  Proverbs 9:8.

Verse chosen from today’s Bible reading; Proverbs 7-9, and Romans 9.

What happens when you get criticized?

My first reaction is that I become defensive.  I quickly am prepared to justify what I’ve done, certain that the critic has assessed me unjustly.

Today’s verse puts me in the “mockers” category for this behavior.

I can’t imagine someone loving to be criticized.  I want to build up a resume of uncontested “rightness.”  If I do that then who could find fault with what I do?  I would be so spectacular that I could then start to criticize others.

When I look at my life I think of the concept of doing to others as you would want them to do to you.  If I dislike being criticized, then I would be the perfect person not to criticize others.  Yet I do.

“I am a target for this verse and I thank You for it.  I must accept criticism.  I must be willing to change if it is Your will.  Guide and direct me.  I surrender to You.”

Ever been criticized and said thank you for it?  Me either!  That needs to change.
