“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” 1 John 3:1.
My wife would nail me with the title line more than a few times. It was never intended to be a compliment!
Later, when we visited my, now deceased, parents, I would say to my father, “My wife recently paid me the highest compliment ever: She said I sounded just like you!” My wife would cringe, and we would get a good laugh out of it.
Today’s verse brings out the thought of being like God. I, as a believer, am a child of His. I’m in His family. If I’ve spent time with Him, I should sound like Him.
How painful would this remark be to a believer?: “You DON’T sound like your Father.”
The words I use my be the offshoot of time spent with God. His Words must permeate my word selection.
Another thought for me was the start of the last sentence; “The reason the world does not know us…..” Why might the world not know that I am a child of God? Maybe I have no distinguishing qualities? Maybe I have no distinguishing words?
The end of the verse states that the world doesn’t know God, so therefore are unable to recognize the Godly. Certainly true. I think that 1 John was written to folks who did stand out as Godly and were taking heat for it.
I must remember that I am in God’s family and must always act accordingly.
I must also remember that I am a “child” in God’s family. Growing up I never told my parents what I was going to do instead I ran an idea by them and asked for permission. If it was alright then guidelines were put in place (Home when the street lights went on.) and off I went. How often do I fail to remember my relationship as a child to a father?
It is such an honor to have Him as my Father. He is so amazing. You might say, He’s worth bragging about. Of identifying myself with. So much food for thought!
