Guard every word

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”  Ephesians 4:29.

Verse chosen from today’s Bible reading; Ecclesiastes 7-9, and Ephesians 4.

Talk about an impossible task: All my words are to be need-meeting and beneficial!

How easy to use words to add needs to folks and to use words for my benefit.

How close to God I would have to be to do this just for an hour in someone’s company.  I have too many “say-its-and-regret-its.”

My walk with God must be consciously ongoing.  Too often I drift along handing out whatever comes into my head and fearing not the consequences of godless words.  This needs to stop.

There will come a day when I will be accountable for what I have done.  I cannot be an instrument of evil.  I’m not thinking here of harsh words but of unhelpful words.  People need to be encouraged, verbally patted on the back.  I must get into that word-wise.

“Lord, only in Your strength can I be the man You want me to be.  My words often betray my relationship with You.  Forgive me, Lord.  Prick my conscience when it happens so that I can apologize and be restored to a right relationship to You and to others.  I am desperate for Your help.  Guide me.  Lead me, I beg.”

Do not let ANY unwholesome talk………..good luck with that apart from God!

Words, words!

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”  Ephesians 4:29.

Verse chosen from today’s Bible reading: Ephesians 1-4.

I am struck again by the Word of God!

The misuse of words is where I live, unfortunately.  Too often my words bring unhappiness.

The thought that my words are the overflow of my heart is even more disheartening.

I write so often about the need to be right with God.  I write it, but oh so often am loose from Him.  I can think that I’m close to Him but my words betray me.

The words I should be using, according to today’s verse, are supposed to “benefit” those who hear them.  That is a burden, for sure!

My words are to be a gift, something nice.  Something welcomed by those who hear them.  What a way to go I have on that one!

Those in my midst would surely be the beneficiaries of my getting this verse right.  This, however, does not just require a commitment to be better.  This requires a heart right with God that produces a Godly default mode when I am about to speak.

“Lord, thank You for loving me enough to instruct me.  To reveal to me the errors of my way.  I need to use Your Words to bless those who hear me.  Forgive me for putting coal in the stockings of those within earshot.  Cleanse my heart.  Fill me with You, I pray this day.”

My words are indicators of my relationship to God.  Am I handing out word gifts?

Unwholesome talk

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”  Ephesians 4:29

(Verse chosen from today’s Bible reading – Ecclesiastes 7-9 & Ephesians 4)

Another direct hit on me!

The things I say have consequences.  The things I say are heard by God as well as those to whom the words are directed.

Will I ever grasp the thought that God is in my midst?  I say and pray so often that I want to please Him in word and deed.  But when given the frequent opportunity to do just that I fail miserably.

The words that seem to get me into the most trouble are the quick words.  No time is spent filtering the wisdom of what I’m saying.  I react without God in the mix.  Often those “reacting” words draw a bad reaction from the hearer.  And on and on it sometimes goes.

More reason to be tightly drawn to God.

“The closer I am to God the more I will think His Thoughts after Him.”  – Andrew Murray

If my heart/mind is saturated with Him, the better the chance that I will sound like Him.

“Lord, there isn’t a thing about me that doesn’t need Your Presence.  I surrender to You.”
