Do you pray like a know-it-all?

“We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”  Romans 8:26.

Verse chosen from today’s Bible reading; Proverbs 4-6 and Romans 8.

Do we really think that we know what we need?

There’s no way that we do.  Our total vision of things is majorly limited.  We see through a glass darkly.

BUT that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t make requests to God!  We need to have conversations with Him.  He is indeed our Father.

If there is a message for me out of this, it is that my requests are often too specific.  I base this thought on the prayer of Jesus for us at the end of John 17.  Few specifics but important generalities.  The same with the Lord’s Prayer, if you reflect on it.

I, too often, want to tell God what to do.  To treat Him as MY servant.  Think how I would speak if I remembered that I am HIS servant.

Conversely there are some very specific things that come along that would encourage very specific prayers.  What I like here is that our God can figure out, and handle, the necessary details for His people.  We can trust that forever!  Hallelujah.

“Lord, You are the way-maker.  Help me to live accordingly.  Help me to call on You but ultimately to follow You.  To eagerly seek Your Will.  To align my will with Your Will so that what I do pleases You.  I love You, Father.”

Are your prayers too specific?

I need help

d1“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” Romans 8:26

(Verse chosen from today’s Bible reading – Romans 5-8)

What a blessing for the Godly!

I am desperately weak. I don’t know what I should be doing sometimes. Other times I know what I should be doing and end up doing the opposite. I pray to God with a confused, at best, sense of what I need.

In the Old Testament Elijah was so discouraged that he prayed that God would take his life. Elijah did not get what he asked because God had plans in place for Elijah beyond that day. God hears the prayers of the righteous but gives them what He wants them to have.

There are situations where what I need to pray for is clear. Someone is sick so I pray that they get better. Sometimes I get to a place where I have options. I don’t know what to do. God does and I have His Holy Spirit within me. This verse tells me that the Holy Spirit prays for me. What could be better!

“Father, I am so weak spiritually. Thank You for giving me Your Holy Spirit as a comfort and as a helper. I cling to You. I beg for Your direction for my life. Show me Your Ways. Teach me Your Path so that I may walk rightly. I love You, Lord!”

I have help

“The Spirit helps in our weakness.  We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”  Romans 8:26

(Verse chosen from today’s Bible reading – Proverbs 4-6 & Romans 8)

The world sure is a big and busy place.  But God is not overwhelmed by what I consider big.

This verse suggests that in my weakness the Spirit takes over.  That is comforting given the magnitude of what is going on around me.

God knows what is going on in my life.  Often in prayer I decide that He doesn’t know, so I inform Him.  Another “often in prayer,” is when I try to tell God of the type of “fixing” I’m looking for………”give me a good day.”

I need to align myself with Him in prayer.  I need to realize that He is Almighty and not mighty.  I can never assume that I have any sense for what God wants done.  I certainly have no clue on His timing!

I need to trust Him with all my heart.  I need to remove my understanding from the situation or the solution.  Let God be God.  Let the Holy Spirit fill in the cracks.  I must let go and let God.

“Father, I submit to You.  My understanding is very limited, certainly not worth relying on.  You know everything.  You know my comings and goings.  You know what the straight path for me is.  I want to be on that path.  Guide me there, I beg!”

Holy Spirit help (Romans 8:26)

(Verse chosen from today’s Bible reading – Proverbs 4-6 & Romans 8)

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.  We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.”  Romans 8:26

What lessons are there for me in this Scripture?

Some situations do not have obvious solutions. Some situations have particulars that I am not privy to.

No problem!  The Holy Spirit intercedes for me and the Holy Spirit knows what needs to be done.

My part is presenting the situation to God.  He is promising here to refine my presentation.  What a comfort that is!

I am instructed in other Scripture to pray frequently. Now I have certainty that when a prayer need gets beyond my understanding that the Holy Spirit will step in and help.  Hallelujah!
